LEICESTER youngsters Joe and Dan Thompson are set to battle it out for the British 500cc Youth Championship title on Saturday.
The twins head to Belle Vue for the fifth and final round of the series (6pm) separated by just two points in the overall standings.
Joe, who has won the most recent events at King’s Lynn and Edinburgh, holds a narrow advantage over Dan, who won the second round at the Paul Chapman & Sons Arena in August.
However, with the 18-16-14-12 scoring system in operation, a victory for Dan at the National Speedway Stadium would assure him of at least a run-off for the title.
Meanwhile Joe knows that if he finishes ahead of his brother he will take the title, with both having previously been successful at 125cc level earlier in their careers.
He said: “I’m really looking forward to Belle Vue. It’s such a nice track, and I can’t wait for it.”
There is an eight-rider field in the Thompsons’ class as the 500cc entry has been split into two categories, with the likes of Harry McGurk, Archie Freeman and Elliot Kelly having proved very competitive throughout the series.
Meanwhile Watling JCB Lions mascot Max James could also take the title at 250cc level at the culmination of his season-long duel with Luke Harrison.
James leads Harrison by two points, although Harrison needs to come through a pre-meeting fitness test in order to take his place after suffering a shoulder injury at Edinburgh.
Saturday’s action at Belle Vue takes place behind closed doors but Leicester’s social media platforms will be updated, and the meeting is being filmed so supporters will be able to see the key action over the coming days.
